Question 1

What is Systems Thinking in the AI Era?

Accepted Answer

Systems Thinking in the AI Era is a five-course series, Course 0 plus Courses I-IV, for developers who already write code and want to make the architectural calls an AI agent cannot. Course 0 teaches the workflow of commanding an AI agent on real work. Courses I-IV teach the 7 universal building blocks and 3 external entities through discovery labs, case studies, and system design challenges.

Question 2

How many courses are in the series?

Accepted Answer

Systems Thinking in the AI Era has five courses: Course 0 (Command the Agents), Course I (The Universal Building Blocks), Course II (Content Systems), Course III (Real-Time Systems), and Course IV (Business & Transaction Systems). Course 0 is sold separately, and Courses I-IV are sold together as one bundle.

Question 3

What are the 7 universal building blocks?

Accepted Answer

The 7 universal building blocks are: Service (request/response), Worker (background processing), Key-Value Store (caching), File Store (media storage), Queue (messaging), Relational Database (structured data), and Vector Database (AI/similarity search). These interface patterns power Instagram, Netflix, Uber, Gmail, and every system you use daily.

Question 4

How does system thinking help me work with AI?

Accepted Answer

AI writes the code. The judgment to know which system to build, and whether the AI got it right, is what this series builds, through the 7 building blocks.

Question 5

How much does the course series cost?

Accepted Answer

Course 0 of Systems Thinking in the AI Era costs $99, and the Courses I-IV bundle costs $299. Courses I-IV are not sold as individual courses. Separate from the paid courses, the building-block articles, the video series, and the Scaffold skill are free.

Question 6

Do I need programming experience?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you should be comfortable reading and understanding code. The course focuses on system design and architectural thinking rather than teaching programming fundamentals. If you can implement features but struggle with architectural decisions like 'How would you design Instagram?', this course is perfect for you.

Question 7

How much time does Course I take to complete?

Accepted Answer

Course I of Systems Thinking in the AI Era takes 10 weeks at 1-2 hours a week. Course I includes 8 video lessons, 2 interactive Python labs, a case study, feedback on your answers, and a 3-part system design challenge. Course I is part of the Courses I-IV bundle and is self-paced, and everything stays accessible.

Question 8

Who is the instructor?

Accepted Answer

Kay Ashaolu is a Continuing Lecturer at UC Berkeley School of Information with 10+ years teaching experience, and an Engineering Manager with 15+ years industry experience at AncestryDNA and Morgan Stanley. He holds degrees from Princeton University (B.S.E. Electrical Engineering) and UC Berkeley (M.I.M.S.). His research focuses on accelerating professional growth for early-career software engineers.
